阿里山森林鐵路為順應地形地勢的關係，而軌道呈現一個「Ω」字形，登山鐵路在山谷或溪流間蜿蜒鋪設，甚至繞上一圈一百八十度大彎，但是海拔高度獲得提升，又名Ω type turn，或稱為 U-turn line。而在阿里山森林鐵道中在Ω形鐵道(Ω type turn / U-turn line)車站設站，也就是火車從進站到出站的方向恰好是180度，則有水社寮車站與二萬坪車站。
